Modern steel chairs: Philippe Starck’s Von Vogelsang chairs

There is a surfeit of contract furniture nowadays. I mean, just browse the Internet and you’ll see chairs and tables of all shapes, sizes, and colors. A whole lot of them are the creations of young designers, and probably just as many are the brainchildren of established designers, those who have already established a reputation for themselves in the furniture design industry throughout the years.
Take Philippe Starck, for instance. This man is a titan in the design world. His furniture is used in domestic and commercial settings all over the world: as restaurant tables, modern bistro chairs, café seating, and so much more. He has numerous awards under his belt, probably too many to mention. These days when you say modern furniture design, chances are you’ll come across the name Philippe Starck.
The Von Vogelsang Stacking Chair is just one of his many creations. Modern design doesn’t get any better than this. When it comes down to the nitty-gritty, pieces of furniture, like chairs, should be functional first and foremost. Comfort comes a close second, design third. At least in my opinion, anyway. This stacking chair probably meets all three criteria.
It is a no-frills chair, but that does not mean it is unattractive. On the contrary, its very simplicity is what is appealing about it. The smoothness of the tubular steel frame, the steel sheet that is painted silver grey – and which looks like it isn’t torturous to sit on because it’s punched in such a way as to accommodate one’s derriere in some sort of comfort at least. Also, the back rest would provide a measure of firm support.
If I were the owner of a café or restaurant, I would not be hard pressed to get these Starck chairs. Even when stacked, they look so classy. Typical Starck.
